The Preservation League of NYS awarded $40,000 by the New York State Council on the Arts

The Preservation League of New York State announced today a grant award totaling $40,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the nonprofit arts and culture sector. Through New York State’s continued investment in arts and culture, NYSCA has awarded $82 million this year to 509 artists and 1,497 organizations across the state. This grant will provide general operating support for the League’s statewide work.

Revamping the Preservation Colleagues Program: A Priority for Our 50th Year

Since 1997, the League’s Preservation Colleagues program has strengthened the work of preservationists across the state. Our Colleagues are the front-line advocates and the behind-the-scenes heroes working on behalf of endangered landmarks, historic neighborhoods, rural landscapes, and commercial centers in their respective service areas. Meet our new Development Director, Kaitlyn Robitaille

Kaitlyn Robitaille has nearly ten years fundraising experience, having worked at nonprofit organizations including the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the New Britain Museum of American Art and most recently, Project SAGE, a domestic violence prevention agency in northwestern Connecticut. Kaitlyn has an MA degree from Trinity College in American Studies, a BA degree in history from SUNY New Paltz, and an AAS degree from Dutchess Community College in early childhood education. Kaitlyn lives in Poughkeepsie New York with her husband, daughter, and many pets.

Announcing the 2024 Zabar Scholars

Since 2019, the League has been awarding cash scholarships to the best and brightest preservation students studying in NYS. The Zabar Family Scholarship Program was established by former League Trustee Lori Zabar and continues to award students in her memory. This year’s applicants were extremely strong, inspiring a lively discussion among our scholarship jury. The three students receiving scholarships this year truly rose to the top, and we are honored to support them. Remembering Joan Kaplan Davidson and Celebrating Her Far-Reaching Legacy

The League was saddened to hear of the passing of Joan Davidson this past weekend. Joan’s impact was felt far and wide, through her philanthropy at the J.M. Kaplan Fund and the Furthermore Foundation, her involvement in important advocacy in the Hudson Valley and New York City, and her annual Shad Party at Midwood, her home in the Hudson Valley. Joan had served on the League’s Trustees Council since 2011, but her importance to the Preservation League and our programs is much deeper than that. Over the years, Joan played a vital role in supporting some of the Preservation League’s most important programs and initiatives.

Announcing the 2023 Zabar Scholars

The League was thrilled to receive a record number of applications for the 2023 Zabar Family Scholarship. Established by former League Trustee Lori Zabar, the Zabar Scholarship has been supporting three students every year since 2019. Thanks to an outpouring of support following the passing of Lori Zabar early last year, the League was able to increase this year’s scholarships to $2,500. The three students receiving scholarships this year truly represent the future of our field, and we are honored to support them.

Pillar Spotlight: Arete S. Warren

Arete served as Chair of the League’s Board of Trustees from 2009-2012 and continues to be deeply involved in the League’s work to this day. She has served on the statewide Excellence in Historic Preservation Award Jury for three decades, and her steadfast service has helped guide the League to becoming one of the most successful statewide preservation organizations in the nation. Arete is a League champion and exemplifies what it means to be a Pillar of New York.

The League Awarded Recovery Funding from the New York State Council on the Arts

The Preservation League of NYS has received three Regrowth and Capacity grants of $10,000 each from the New York State Council on the Arts. These grants will support the organization’s programming, as they continue their ongoing recovery from pandemic challenges. The responsive funding of NYSCA is providing nearly 1000 organizations with over $13 million in recovery support in FY23, as part of their historic FY23 $90 million in grant making and $150 million in multi-year capital support.
