Bold Moves and Mixed Media - Conference Presentations
The Preservation League presented two sessions at the 2017 Statewide Preservation Conference in Rochester earlier this month.
Dragon Rock at Manitoga
Preservation Associate Frances Gubler organized and moderated a session on 20th century artist homes. Alison Cross, Executive Director of Manitoga (Putnam County) and Emily Zaengle, Executive Director of Stone Quarry Hill Art Park (Madison County) discussed Dragonrock and the Dorothy Riester House, respectively.
In 2010, Manitoga received a Preserve New York grant of $8,000 for a Historic Landscape Report of their Woodland Garden. In 2016, the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park received a Preserve New York grant of $7,000 for a Building Condition Report of the Dorothy Riester Home.
Moving the Farminton Meeting House
Director of Preservation Erin Tobin organized and moderated a session on building relocation as historic preservation. This session included presentations by Jack Waite (John G Waite Associates), Kathleen LaFrank (NYS Historic Preservation Office), Randy Crawford (Crawford & Stearns Architects), and Christine O’Malley (Historic Ithaca).
During the session, titled The Right Place: The Appropriateness of Moving Historic Buildings, preservation architect Jack Waite discussed the relocation of the Farmington Meeting House, which received an $120,000 Endangered Properties Intervention Program loan from the Preservation League to support the cost of stabilizing and moving the building. Jack also showed a video of the relocation of Hamilton Grange National Memorial in New York City, whose restoration received a 2014 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award.
